‘KING KENNY’

13th – 17th September. Weeknights @ 9.45pm

ESPN Classic pays tribute to the football legend as he releases his book on September 16th ‘ Kenny Dalglish: My Liverpool Home – Then And Now ‘ which covers his time with Liverpool FC both as player and manager, as well as in more recent times as advisor to Rafael Benitez.

It’s difficult to believe, now, but, in the summer of ’77, Liverpool supporters wondered whether they’d ever be able to replace the departing Kevin Keegan? Who could possibly fill the Reds’ iconic number 7 shirt, now? The answer arrived in the form of a shaggy-haired Scotsman, who’d go on to delight the Kop for a decade-and-a-half – by the name of Kenny Dalglish.
‘King Kenny’ crowned a supreme debut season by slotting home the winning goal in 1978’s European Cup Final – a match available to enjoy again this month, on Classic – plus also netting for Scotland in their World Cup victory over Cruyff-era Holland, which also shows in September. Plus, Dalglish features prominently in ‘The Magic Of The FA Cup’, ‘Sports Years: 1991’ (the era of his mysterious resignation as Liverpool’s manager) and ‘Premier League 1994/95’; the season of his miraculous, title-winning campaign at Blackburn Rovers.

Don’t miss:

  • FIFA World Cup 1978: Scotland v Netherlands – scored in famous 3-2 victory
  • European Cup Final 1978: Liverpool FC v Club Brugge KV – scored the winning goal
  • FA Cup Greatest Players: Kenny Dalglish – includes section on the Kop hero and his partnership with Ian Rush; one of the finest ever seen in England. After eight brilliant years as a player he became Liverpool’s first player / manager and in the space of five years he was voted ‘Manager of the Year’ three times and led Liverpool to a League and FA Cup double in 1986 and further championships in 1988 and 1990
  • Sports Years: 1991 – club legend Kenny Dalglish broke hearts at Liverpool by tendering his resignation
  • Barclays Premier League 1994/1995: Liverpool v Blackburn – wins the Premier League Title as manager of Blackburn
