In the month of trans-Atlantic sport’s greatest single competition, Classic whets golfing appetites for the struggle ahead by recalling some of the Cup’s all-time greatest moments. And, in doing so, reminds viewers that, right up until comparatively recently, this was a competition between Great Britain and Ireland versus America. Only the late-1970s brilliance of Spaniard Seve Ballesteros and his regular public suggestions that an all-Europe team should be created did this competition truly come alive again. The mid-1980s battles which followed were amongst the very greatest in the entire tournament’s long and glorious history.
